My Rose Gone With the Wind

by Padmore Agbemabiese

Have the petals of my Rose gone with the wind

Have the petals of my Rose gone with the wind

I met you
like when the rose I’m holding
was young and half-open to the sky
our eyes met but hardly spoke
and we went our different ways
like the rose I am holding
that once was young, fresh and white

many years have passed like the seasons
we were lost in the forest of droughts

many a time we walked
like rain trickling through pores of parched earth in the desert
our ears were awake the chimes of the wind

one day the rain fell on our patched earth
and nourished everything
we met again

I remember the rose I held once in my hand
will the color change from white to red
sometimes I wonder if it still could be you
young fresh, and white
whether its soft petals will still be
so smooth and fragrant

will it move my heart again
like when it was young, fresh and white
with lips that are of tenderness
and bring home happiness

Oh! flowers wither as season change
petals fall to the ground when autumn winds blow
have the petals of my Rose gone with the wind
shattered and gone with the wind...

I’ve Written Your Name

Boxed Memories

Boxed Memories

I've carved your name deep into my memory
that you live in the depth of my soul
I've engraved it in my unpublished thoughts
to adorn the pages of my life

I've thawed your name into my veins
to flow to my heart in the silence of the night
I have kept your name like harvest songs
and I remember it with tears of nostalgia

sometimes with the future in my eyes
I write your name with the ink of happiness
with a longing that begins and ends with the color of hope
thus, decorated with the purest feelings
it fills my soul with the breeze of love’s bliss

like a picture,
I’ve framed your name with autumnal passion
put it on the window’s sill of my soul
a little window that looks to the sea
the sea of my endless desires for you and me
to look gloriously beautiful all year round

many a time I strain my mind
just to touch your breath
some days I curve my glance
to catch just a glimpse of you
all because somewhere deep in my heart
there is a spot no finger has ever touched
it is a place reserved for you and you alone

deep inside my heart is a little box
It is buried at a place where no one has ever been
inside this box are memories of you
whenever I’m lost at the centerpiece of storms
anytime I am deep in the turbulence of loneliness
I peep deep into this box
to gather into my bosom
the many joys you brought me
when first we met
